“I Due Mondi” is located in Umbria’s Perugia province, in the town of San Lorenzo di Montone. The area features a succession of hills and quiet valleys where the green of the farmed areas alternates with large woody areas. The plain is full of cultivated lands and is crossed by the Tiber river, which gains force through many tributaries that cut through the surrounding valleys. The area enjoys a temperate climate and features an unusually varied flora, with many foods of the woodland, including precious truffles and various types of herbs and wild fruits. Boars, fallow deer, roe-bucks, and hares live in perfect ecological balance with the area. Since 2003 Montone has been part of the "The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy" club instituted by the National Association of Italian Towns. It is a true architectural gem that contains all of the special qualities of a carefully preserved historic medieval village. It was home of the famed Andrea Fortebracci, known as Braccio da Montone (1368-1424), one of the greatest leaders of mercenary troops that history has ever known. The town gives its visitors the chance to wander charming narrow medieval streets and appreciate a hefty artistic heritage found in the simple architectures of its buildings and churches and in the works of pictorial art, the silvers and vestments kept in the museum of San Francesco. Sights to see include the Collegiata of 1310, the parish church of San Gregorio, built around 1000, the original ethnographic museum “Il Tamburo Parlante” [the talking drum] with interesting findings from east Africa, the recently restored Rocca di Braccio, and the majestic Castello di Aries. For those interested in observing the sky and the celestial phenomenon, the medieval village of Coloti, a short ways from Montone, offers a full Astronomical Observatory that can be used by visitors interested in the stars and the night sky. Walking through Montone also brings you to small, fine historic shops where you can breathe in the atmosphere of the past and appreciate the flavours of genuine, well-made foods, such as local cold cuts, fresh ricotta cheese and flavourful caciotta cheeses, honeys, fruit and berry preserves, truffles, mushrooms, wild herbs, sparkling and natural white wines, and full-bodied red wines. And there's more: a wrought iron workshop next to Porta del Borgo Vecchio, an artisan carpenter shop where the art of restoring antique furniture is practiced, and pillow lace artisans that follow a tradition started with the nuns of the cloister of Santa Caterina. Throughout the year, a series of cultural and artistic events of diverse kinds and of international scope take place in Montone, including the Springtime Festival with classical music concerts; a festival of European cinema, an event that was started in collaboration with Umbria Film Festival; a traditional band festival, with the participation of foreign and Italian bands; and the festival of the Arietano castle to re-evoke the feats of the great mercenary leader Braccio da Montone, where the three neighbourhoods of the town challenge each other during the last week of August, representing scenes of medieval life, taking part in knightly jousts and parading in historic processions. The festival of master forgers is another event not to miss, taking place the last weekend of May with an exhibit of wrought iron works. Then there is the festival of the woods during the last weekend of October, with the presentation of foods from the woodland, organic foods and local cuisine, and crafts and antiques plus concerts and shows in the square. | |
